Kel McDonald and I have a new Kickstarter running for the next book in the Cautionary Fables and Fairytales series, please check it out here! It’s full of fantastic art and awesome stories, and there’s free shipping in the US and UK! We’re really close to the goal too!

A silhouette with a hat? Neither of our protagonists had hats and I doubt they’d stop for a fashion accessory with this level of urgency at play. Could be a new character but it’s a but 11th-hour for that by this point. Didn’t get the impression Victor was the rescuing type. Hrmmm…

    • MoeLane

Shadowy hat? Hmm. Where in the world is Henry Barber the Fourth?

      • Tikatu

        In the shackles, I think.

        • John

I agree that it is Henry in the shackles, which raises the possibility that Superbia’s comment was not understood. (Izzy speaks French, but I’m not sure Henry does.) On the other hand, it seems unlikely that having the key to the shackles in his hand will be bad for Henry.
My best guess at this point is that the shadow across the way is Izzy.
On an unrelated note, Ms. Ashwin I hope you are able to take some time off to enjoy the holiday, and I look forward to the conclusion of this story after the holiday is over.

          • Sanjay Merchant

Henry speaks the international language of Being Given the Key.

          • Percabeth_trash

Even if Henry doesn’t understand French (which would be odd, given his upbringing), he should at least understand “Bonne chance”.

        • MoeLane

…Well, yes, but I was making an apparently too-obscure reference. :)

      • peacehammer

Maybe he got some lessons from Carmen Sandiego?

    • Saibot

Same hatted, shadowy figure from Presumably, whomever flew the boat home from the lighthouse got back in plenty of time to change into proper skulking attire.

      • Saibot

Additionally, if said pilot was able to command the power of the pendant, changing attire could take… no time.

        • Except. if that is the shadowy figure we suspect it is, she doesn’t have the pendant (assuming you have to wear it for its effects to be permanent, of course).

      • Sanjay Merchant

Didn’t even notice the figure in the previous comic. Heh.

    • They wouldn’t stop for a fashion accessory, no, but they might for a disguise (such the classic highly conspicuous but suitably identity-concealing trenchcoat-and-fedora ensemble) to conceal the fact that there were two Izzies. That, or it’s the Fourth Doctor.

      • John

        Have a jelly baby.

  • Darkoneko Hellsing

Oooh did she tell her that in french ?

    • Sanjay Merchant

      Mais, oui!

      • Darkoneko Hellsing

        ou pas.

  • warun

Ah, trying to pander to and inflame the base emotions that make up the Sins. Of course that’s going to backfire when it comes to Envy.

Unless of course Mr. Luxuria is counting on that out of Ms. Invidia, but I don’t think he is, if only because it feels too late in the story for that particular beat. I could of course be wrong.

And I’m sure the joke has already been made, though I can’t remember it if so, but seeing all those names lined up in the tags makes me think of parodying a certain board game. “Ms. Superbia in the Conservatory with my own magnificent physique! Who needs weapons when you are as perfect as I?”

    • Iituem

Ms Acedia in the Lounge with the chaise longue?

      • John

Sounds like too much work. Zzzz.

  • Sanjay Merchant

Upon seeing that silhouette, did the Carmen San Diego “you’re getting close” musical sting play in anyone else’s head?

  • Columbine

I really really love this page for many reasons and feel I should give an in-depth review and analysis and feedback but uh all that’s coming to mind is ‘WAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!’

  • LSKollt

lol, “if you reckon” really seems to fit her vocabulary. ;p

  • Oh look, a thing

Considering the prevalence of sacrifices in the comic, I wouldn’t be surprised if that wine is poisoned. Mr. Luxuria isn’t holding one currently, but even if he were, he has survived a beheading in the past.

    • David Argall

Probably not poison. The butler also appears in the “prior” story and so is likely to survive this one. Of course, that butler could have been his son, or something that big could just survive a normal dose of poison. But the assumption is that it was the same man, who didn’t get backstabbed this time.
And while Lust wouldn’t be adverse to having it all, that is more Glutton. Lust might have reservations about losing valuable minions, even if he thinks he can replace them easily enough.

      • Iituem

Having it all is more Avarice, I’d say. Speaking of gluttony…

Lux: “Join me, and I shall give you whatever it is you most desire!”

Butler: *points to stack of empty plates*

        Lux: “Ah. Waiter!”

      • John

The Gluttony story involved people being scooped out of multiple time points to a bubble outside the normal space-time continuum, so I have no idea if that story line occurs before or after this one from the butler’s perspective. I can see an argument for after, but I wouldn’t be confident enough in it to make any bets either way.

    • I wouldn’t bet on that, one way or the other.

But it looks as if Invidia has plans (Panel Three)

    • Xan

Perhaps it’s more that accepting the drinks is akin to signing the contract, as per O’Malley and Fairbanks? It’s a rule of dealing with fae, so no reason why it might not apply here too.

Or a way to mark the targets of the summoning, if Lust’s trying to get everyone into physical bodies.

    • dana

Not necessarily poison, but maybe a sleeping potion. If he wants them alive, but unable to interfere.

    • Corsenna

Not sure… I count seven glasses in the previous comic. Of course, one might be either for a victory drink or for a sarcastic ‘here, the vic gets one too’ bit.

  • fairportfan • 4 days ago

Has anyone yet wondered if the shadowy figure in the last panel is important?

If not, i’ll be glad to.

Now i’m going to wonder f the shadowy figure in the background of this comic is the same shadowy figure.

  • I spy with my little eye … a sneaky grin.

  • Wyvern

    Oh-ho! Dissension in the ranks!

  • Anyone notice something rather peculiar about “Izzy’s” scarf in panel 4?

I’d forgotten the bit about how the amulet could shift its shape to incorporate itself into accessories other than the default necklace.

  • Nonesuch

Anyone who is not entirely surprised but completely delighted, clap your hands! :D

  • JM

Really really want a whole comic about Superbia and her girlfriend.

    • Sanjay Merchant

      So does Ms. Superbia. ;-)
