She ships it.

I added us to the Top Webcomics list! There’s a link at the side there, and one below too. You can vote once every 24 hours, and it’d be super-keen if you could throw Widdershins a few votes every now and then!

Transcripts

Florrie- (handing Harry an ash tray) Put that horrible thing out!
Sid- I actually thought he wasn’t real, you know, I thought it was all exciting penny-novel stuff that could *never* happen, not really..
Harry- You get used to it.

Sid- (full of awe) Exploring the world, finding magical artifacts, chasing down rogues.. What a life!
Florrie- (with teacup) For *some*, perhaps..

Florrie- (pouring tea for Sid) Though I don’t know how she intends to find herself a husband, carrying on the way she does! Unless she goes out and actually *catches* a-

(she pauses and looks sidelong at Sid, who sipping his tea)

(she looks at harry with a spreading smile)
Harry- *No*.

Florrie- Oh, Harry! I’m sure you could’ve just asked him nicely, the handcuffs weren’t necessary!
Sid- Pardon?
Florrie- You need to think long term, you know!
Sid- Sorry.. What?
Florrie- Is he a career man?
Sid- ..me?

Sid- Well I’m a wizard, but-
Florrie- (pouring tea for Harry) A wizard! Well done, Harry!
(Harry pulls a face)

Sid : moi ?

Sid : Hé bien je suis magicien, mais..

Does she have to be THAT kind of sister? They look close in age, you’d think they’d be closer in mindset, closer in understanding, just plain CLOSE, like normal. It gets on my nerves that a lot of siblings in stories act in direct opposition towards each other; dress the opposite, talk the opposite, read situations opposite, until you wouldn’t believe they grew up on the same planet, let alone in the same household with the same parents.

    • You obviously don’t have siblings.

      • TrueWolves

Indeed, infact, I’ve found the closer the age of the siblings, the more different and sometimes even aggressive they get towards each other. It’s usually only in cases of a larger age difference where one tries to look up and emulate the other. When they are very close in age they often seem to get a competing mentality and be as different as possible from each other to stand out – An estimation from many cases of close-age siblings I’ve met and in one case experienced. :P Of course, there is going to be exceptions but they are not the norm.

    • Anonymous

I dunno, I’d consider quite a lot of siblings I know to be complete opposites :) They do share a lot of traits, though, mostly things like stubbornness, it’s mostly the outside that’s different.

If it makes you any happier, Harry’s got a further two older sisters and a younger brother! The brother is Florrie’s twin, and he looks up to Harry a lot, thus acts quite a lot like her. Not that he’d ever admit that.

I overthink my character’s families >_> It’ll come up one day though.

      • TrueWolves

This just means there is all the more to draw from for ideas. ^n-n>

No idea what the statistics are, but I know my sister and I (three years apart) are at least as different as Florence and Harriet. It’s actually kind of fun for me to psychoanalyze, because I can sometimes see how we’ve been shaped by the same exact influences and events in radically different ways.

      • Anonymous

I’d imagine it’d make for one heck of a psychological study! My husband and his brother are the same, watching their different reactions in say, the run up to each of their weddings was like night and day.

I’m actually an only child, for all I write about siblings, and I do worry that I get the dynamic wrong as a result. Hopefully I’m on the right track though, considering how many sisters I gave Harry..!

Coming back to the faces-from-the-side thing. If you look at the lower left split-panel. The top one of those has a great (at least realistic) look, while in the lower one it looks like there’s been a knife at work :p

Not that I should complain, your drawings are way better than mine! Followed you through Darken and I’m really looking forward to this one. So far I like the characters a lot (although the crims boss guy is a bit.. impractically flamboyant? I don’t know :p).

    • Anonymous

I drew this page a few months ago, so I couldn’t really put your crit to work on it, I’m afraid! When it went up I knew you’d have a problem with that particular panel, and you’re probably right! I’ll try to do something about it, but it won’t show up in the actual comic until January or so, sorry :(

      • XartaX

Hey hey, no need to apologize :P I’m just happy to be of use by pointing out the things I notice. It’s up to you if you want to make use of it :) I’m by no means a professional drawer or anything, but I really want this to be a great comic. Watching your progress from the beginning of Darken have been tons of fun. I feel like your characters are a lot more “alive” (due to a lack of better words) than other webcomics out there.

        Sorry for nagging :p

(Also, crime boss* not crims >___>)

        • Anonymous

Nonono, crit’s good and precious and I need it! Otherwise you end up in a bit of an echo chamber and you never get any better at anything, and I’ve got to get better!

Glad you’ve been enjoying it :) And it’s really nice to hear that about the characters, character writing is my favourite thing to do, so it’s nice to hear I’m doing alright!

Has anyone told you your facial expressions are fantastic? Every panel Florence is in is delightful.

  • Oh, that SMIRK. She knows full well that’s not what Harry was doing, but she’s gonna milk this for all it’s worth.

  • Sanjay Merchant

Her smile in the bottom left-most panel is the most evil grin you’ve ever drawn.  She totally outdoes Jill, Silvador, Gort… everyone.

Also, I think D&D 2 might just be too bad, even for bad movie night.  The behind-the-scenes DVD making of documentary, on the other hand, was hilarious (if laughing at other people’s sheer incompetence is funny to you).

You know the scene where the head honco priesty guy is talking to the main guy and the cursed lady, right near the start? Look over his shoulder, because there’s a dude there pulling these AMAZING bug-eyed faces all throughout. We christened him Face, and he is the best part of the entire movie.

o_o … :D Oh MAN, I love Florrie! I don’t usually go for the proper English lady type, but in this place, this time, she is just wonderful. I wonder whether she and dear old dad didn’t get along so well… I’m going to assume that she’s the older sister, the way she manages to casually boss and bully Harry around, considering what a tough young woman Harry is.

Is Florrie giving her an ashtray to put out her pipe? I love how Harry’s looking at it like “and what am I supposed to do with this precisely?”

Harry is just so done with Florrie. And Sidney is just confused.

  • Nalyd

I know this page is years old but. . . reading this page I was laughing so hard. Then I read your comment, that “She ships it.” and almost fell out of my chair I was laughing so hard.

Oh? Harry he’s a wizard! Well done!
