Is anyone really surprised that Envy, King of Taking What People Have, is capable of taking autonomy from Voss? No? Good. Let’s do this.

    • Euodiachloris

Nope: no surprise here. Not even a jot. :)

      • svartalf

None…none whatsoever. Okay, time to dance.

  • slim kittens

I never expected a winking fox to look that sinister.

  • Ganurath

And now Envy gets to learn the hard way why Voss had to *steal* all his skills. I doubt that body will be able to aim a gun even at this range.

    • Wyvern

What makes you think that Envy, possessing Voss, wouldn’t have access to all the skills that Voss stole?

      • Ganurath

        Optimism, mostly.

        • AJ

Optimism is the refuge of the doomed!

          • billydaking

            Hey now….

“Faith and reason are like the shoes on your feet. You can travel further with both than you can with just one.”

          • billydaking

Also….Wolfe is the Eternal Optimist, paired with the Ultimate Cynic in Mal. They’re like the Power Twiins, only cool.

            • AJ

Aw, that’s a really sweet quote. I shall print it off… and set it ON FIRE!
In seriousness, I am also incurably optimistic. Just not at this moment about this thing.

            • Corsenna

“Form of… a half full bucket of water!”

      • Lleyn

I think what Ganurath was referring to, was that Voss has always been a poor shot. And sharpshooting might just be an ability that he did not bother stealing from anybody yet. Or at least that’s what I’m hoping if Envy decides to take a pot-shot at Wolfe (e.g. in a scuffle). See, I’m an optimist, too ;) And you know what they say about us: We’re incurable *g*

Voss: “Hey, don’t I get a Will Save?”
GM: “Considering you willing went along with the others, ah no.”

    • AJ

Your will has like, negative twelve in penalties right now anyway.

      • svartalf

Negative 12? Heh…D20- more like -19. You’d have to get a natural 20 to save at this point. Guess he rolled a 1.

        • AJ

Twelve seemed like a reasonable number. I think whether he rolled a one determines his personal outcome. “You rolled a one. After Envy possesses your body, you die in a frothing, twitching heap.”

          • Rulebook Lawyer

Or in less polite terms… hand over your character sheet so that I may shred it with the Vorpal Scissors.

            • Nightsbridge

As a GM, I would much prefer to make it an NPC . . . As Envy just did.

            • AJ

Do… you HAVE Vorpal scissors? Because I want some.

              • Rulebook Lawyer

No, but a female GM that I knew did. She used quite effectively when to make a point or keep us male players in line.

      • Wouldn’t a negative penalty actually be a bonus?

        • AJ

No, because I said IN penalties. As in, “Over here, in the notes section where you wrote down your penalties, you’ll see the notation ‘-12 Will'”

  • Talewinds

    Consumed by Envy.

  • Cooper

    Envy just pulled a Blackshard.

    • svartalf

That he did. Thing is…will it accomplish what he seeks? How good is his “backup plan”, after all?

      • r2d2go

Honestly, he made himself rather more vulnerable by doing that. A good shot by our Captain Barber would finish the body off, and she won’t have Wolfe’s moral quandaries.

…but she’s been disabled, probably. Oh well XD

        • AJ

Someone give Florrie the gun that Voss was holding?

  • DocHarleen

Again – I am so very pleased that I picture John de Lancie’s voice for that of Envy. Boy, does it work!

    • Disloyal Subject

Hmm. I envisioned something sibilant and echoing, but DeLancie makes an excellent base underneath all the filters.

  • MoeLane

“No matter how tempted I am with the prospect of unlimited power, I will not consume any energy field bigger than my head.” Evil Overlord Rule 22, according to TV Tropes.

  • Sarah Hardister

That sinister wink really sells the page. What a horribly glib thing to see right before you’re possessed.

    • Ryan Thompson

I think the sinister wink is also the first step of the possession — matching Voss’s eyepatch. Envy is just so good at being sinister that he made sure he would look extra sinister while preparing to possess Voss.

  • That’s a pretty great squishy eyeball fox drawing, btw!

    • Having seen one in person, I’m inclined to agree. The accuracy is uncanny.

      Er… bartender! Check please!

  • Frances Ahlborn

For some reason this brings to mind Fluffmodeus from Something Positive being like “hey! New Friend! *whispers* i’m inside you!”

  • pingo1387

I do like that Envy fully expected Voss to betray him at the last second and had a backup plan all ready to go.

  • Deepbluediver

20 bucks says this ends with Voss getting an eye gouged out.

    • AJ

Too late for that. Might’ve worked if he’d defected two days ago, but now that he’s possessed, the eye isn’t the only place Envy is.

  • A question occurs to me: Is Voss still in there but being dominated by Envy so that he just needs to have his epiphany and banish the spirit to end this, or did Envy enter the stone first so that displacing Voss meant that Voss would be trapped in the stone so that Envy could easily discard him by throwing away the eyepatch like he seems to be about to do in the last frame?

“New version of Firefox downloading. Into your FACE.”

  • Del

    Dear Kate,

I love the richness of the details, and foreshadowing, and all of the little touches in the artwork. You have an instinctive grasp of iconography and moral theology which adds great depth to this fantasy tale. All the more amazing, since it seems that you were not raised or trained as an Orthodox or Catholic Christian.

Right now, I am having a fan-boy moment over the illuminated letters that open each new incarnation of the Deadlies.

  • And this is why we don’t make deals with devils. Well, technically he’s a sin, but they’re similar. You see my point.

  • Redemption plan successfully initiated, cap’n, but we have an unforeseen complication on the bridge.

  • MsElloon

It’s been a couple of days, but I’ve finally caught up from the start! This is really a great webcomic- superb writing, and the way you capture the character’s emotions and the spirits is just brilliant! This has got to be one of my favourite webcomics going- but now I’ll have to get used to waiting every week instead of binge reading :p Keep up the good work! :D
