Although it fills me with dread that Voss and Wolfe are destined to be puppets, I’m curious to see their Envy-produced outfits (Sidney and Verity’s are magnificent)

I ought to be on commission.

. . . I think I see what’s going to happen here. Envy will be unable to comprehend Voss’ change of heart, and give him the freedom to do something horrendous out of envy of all that Wolfe is in comparison to him. But he will not. What Envy doesn’t realize is that Voss DOES care. And it will be their undoing.

And that will fracture Envy’s hold on this world enough for Mal to seize them and proceed with the unsummoning.

Like, Envy is a legit asshole and stuff, but also I enjoy so much the character I kinda hope they don’t defeat it too much or something.

    • John

Envy’s definitely one of the most fun characters among the Deadlies.

  • Ghostdanser

I love this installment, but I must confess to terribly bad thoughts…that last panel I keep thinking….

“To the Batmobile!” (or should that be “Foxmobile”?)

    • non_canon

My first thought when I saw Envy in that first panel was that it looked so much like a dog excited over seeing it’s favorite human.

  • Rulebook Lawyer

Envy is going to get envy’er.

  • AJ

Is it just me or is Wolfe SHAKING? He was in the last page too.

    • Margot

Yes, I think Envy’s frozen him in place, and maybe the shaking is him fighting that?

  • John

I am still hoping that Envy’s joy in seeing Voss will turn out to be a mistake on Envy’s part.

I do feel (a little) sorry for Wrath. This is the closest thing to Wrath’s chapter that this story arc has, and Envy’s still getting a better showing than Wrath did.

    • Yeah. Unfortunately I have to give somewhat short shrift to some of them in this chapter, or we’ll be here all decade!

      • Corsenna

I would(/will) happily keep reading to the end of the decade. Just sayin’… On the other hand, seeing the denouement of the chapter well before that would be nice too… I “has a torn”, as the kids say.

      • You could do a ‘Peter Jackson’ and release an ‘extended edition’ book. For a premium price of course. Should pay for the ghost hole…

        • Hah, I was toying with the idea of splitting this chapter into two books to keep up the Kickstarter-per-year streak, but I’ve decided against it, especially since I’ve taken on a little extra non-Widdershins comic work this year which will eat up the rest of my time AND pay for the Ghost Hole!

      • You say that like it’s a Bad Thing…

    Oh, Voss.
I feel so very proud of you right now! :’)

  • JWLM

Ooo! A redemption arc! Everybody needs to cheer for a redemption arc!

  • Do stop messing about and get on with it, there’s good fellows. Ms Barber is still waiting impatiently for the next Deadly to appear in O’Malleyspace and she doesn’t suffer fools gladly.

Envy: Voss! I missed you! I’m happy to tell you that my aim is getting better though…

Since Envy’s text is written in English, but Voss is speaking German, I’m thinking that either the sins (and maybe spirits in general) are speaking some kind of… universally understood language, or that each listener hears their voice in their native language/ a language they understand.

    • Jordan Hiller

      That sounds about right.

      Why not (A) = result (B) : )

Technically they did succeed in distracting him. I love how hard this is for the characters. Puppet-mastering is such a dramatic story-tool. Great work, Kate!

Envy may have overplayed its hand here. While Ben is genuinely envious of Sid’s magical talent, and possibly of Vee’s flair, I’ve yet to see that he envies Wolfe in any way. Envy’s hold on him was already starting to weaken on the last page, and seeing Wolfe – someone for whom he feels none of the negative emotion Envy is trying to elicit – on the stage might be the final push he needs to bring him back to himself.
