When you’re babbling through your yawns it is probably time to stop one or the other. Sorry this one went up 3 hours late, it was my birthday weekend so there was food to eat and such :)

Transcripts

(The moon is high in the sky by the time Harry and Sid reach civilisation again. Sid stretches and yawns as they enter the station..)

Sid: Maybe if we just had a short nap..
Harry: No time.

Harry: (examining the platform timetable) Blast, we missed the train.
Sid: No, there’s another, look..

Sid: (slumping) ..on Saturday. Oh..
Harry: Don’t panic. Macavity caught up to us, how did he do that?

Sid: (rambling through a yawn) Gosh, I hadn’t really thought.. I mean, there’s a couple of magical ways, but he hasn’t got the talent, unless he knows someone who-
Harry: (ignoring his continued theorisation) No, simpler than that.

Sid: ..another train?
Harry: (pointing one out) A freight train. Fewer stops, probably faster.
Sid: I don’t think you’re allowed to actually buy a ticket for-

Sid: ..you’re going to do something illegal again!
Harry: (smiling) Only mildly.

Huh.  I thought the British/European term was “goods train”.

Eh, admittedly I’m not an expert on British English, but I think assuming there’s only one term for anything is a bit silly.

Oh, look at that! The page loads after all. It didn’t load last time the comic updated, and I had some trouble this time, so I’m going to assume that there’s some ad or other thing which prevents Opera from loading the page. Had it happen over at http://www.erstwhiletales.com as well, but trying to reload the page until a different ad is shown seems to work. Though that’s pretty annoying.

Oh gosh D: Mind if I ask you a few questions so I can see what the trouble is?

What happens exactly, where does it stop loading, before the comic or after? Do you have adblock or something similar running? Any idea what the ad was or vaguely what it looked like? If I can get a brand name or something similar I can go and stop it from running.

Sorry about that!

It seems to get stuck at loading element 27/28 (just managed to reproduce it after a few attempts), and the only thing shown is the beige page background at the top of the page. I have no idea which ad it might be, because if it really is an ad, it fails to load. (It’s not the Rajala ad or the Steampunk Gifts ad though, because I get to see those.)

I wouldn’t expect you to be able to track down an ‘invisible’ and unidentified ad, but if it’s possible, perhaps you could have the ads load after everything else? Or is that already being done? It kind of looks like the top banner ad appears after the rest of the page has already loaded, but it’s hard to tell for sure.

I also seem unable to load element 92, and that’s probably the rectangle to the right of the “Recommended comics”, which now says that it couldn’t connect to the server. This isn’t much of a concern for me though, since all the vital elements of the page loaded just fine. ;-)

And I’m not using any adblockers, just in-browser popup blocking. Not even running noscript.

I may have figured out a way to fix the problem on my end. If I go to the “settings for this website” and tell Opera to either disable plugins or only enable plugins on request, the page loads, even on sites which have had this type of problem every time. (And even there, no request is ever made to enable a plugin.) Though that fix may have led to problems with logging in to Disqus, or posting while I’m logged in. So I had to post this through Firefox, even on a site that I’ve never had a problem loading. I guess it’s the internet’s way of telling me that I shouldn’t use Opera.

And since I encountered the loading problem on a site which didn’t have rotating ads, I guess it wasn’t an ad that caused the problem after all. Not really sure what it could be that only happens some times on specific sites. Apart from Erstwhile all of the other sites have had Disqus, but since Erstwhile doesn’t, I think that rules out Disqus as a culprit as well.

Now I’m sorry that I even brought it up in the first place, so I hope that I didn’t send you on a wild goose chase. In the future I should probably just send a link to Opera and ask them why Opera can’t load a site.
