Real drama!!
Real action!!
Real bloodshed!!

It was my birthday yesterday! If you’re feeling altruistic, the best present you can get me is to spread the word about Widdershins! I do only minimal advertising for the comic, so word of mouth really is the best way to help it grow. Got buddies who’d be into this silly wizard comic? Let them know about it!
If you use Tumblr, maybe reblog the update posts like this one, or the ones on Twitter like this!

Not exactly two lights ; It’s say, rather, 2 hands, one for each puppet strings set.

    • Frank Earl

The limelights are how he pins you down to be able to puppeteer you. Wolfe was under his own control until the light shined on him…and Invidia’s being careful to keep the lot of them, except Ben, in those lights or tied/bound up so they can’t get loose.

Ben, however, I suspect, is being underestimated by Invidia.

Well, Ben. Now might be a good time to do something heroic. Anytime now. Don’t feel too rushed or anything. It’s not like lives are on the line or anything. I mean, he’s just one of the seven deadlies, so he wouldn’t do anything too nasty, right? Ben?

    • John

It’s much more fun, I must confess, when lives are on the line. Not mine, of course, but yours old boy, now that would be just fine.

“Fearless” is not exactly the adjective I’d use to describe Voss right now, oh dear! He and Wolfe are looking mighty spiffy though, I must say

    Envy is the worst.

No, he’s just more subtle than most of the others.

Hopefully, this isn’t going to be like that duel in Faust, where Mephistopheles rigs the whole thing – “…only thrust – I’ll parry!”

…Actually, considering who we’re dealing with, it’ll probably be very much like that.

Has Sid spotted something vital? Are Envy’s powers here reliant on those stage lights? Will Sid and Verity be able to do anything about it? Does the situation make you think of Limelight by the Alan Parsons Project? (YouTube link) …Tune in next update! >:=)>

    • Frank Earl

He did at that. It may not be Sid…might be Ben ultimately that saves the day- he’s out in the audience loose, remember.

Invidia’s busy being Invidia…and left one of the opponents out in the audience thinking he wasn’t effective or useful. But then, never interrupt a Foe when they’re off making Mortal mistakes. But then, these are Deadlies…they’re going to make those… >;-D

Earlier everyone was paralyzed when Envy shined the lights on them, so it probably is the stagelights, yeah.

So it looks like Envy can only control a limited amount at one time. Now Sid is all tied up at the moment, and Verity is stuck in the box…but if Ben could snap out of his funk and free Vee…methinks Envy might realize how sadly he has underestimated the lady (and Ben for that matter).

Oh pfft… they are only going to be stage fighting, not real at all. If you look closely they will be fighting the swords rather than each other. Its all fake, why I should go up there and show how it is really done.

And my text should be in green…

But seriously, if he only has two lights and people come at him from three directions…..

      Exactly.

Or perhaps we’ll get to see how good of an escape artist Sid and/or Verity is.

    …[pause in slack-jawed wonder]…
“Always leave them wanting more” is an INCREDIBLE line for Envy. Encapsulates the spirit’s nature, ties into the theatre aspect. Writing score = 100%.

I’ll second that – but it also describes its own torment. No matter what it does or how hard it strives, it can never know satisfaction and must always dwell in the shadow of Pride.

Hey Sid, can you maneuver your bonds under the edge of the saw and get out? What would be useful for you to have suddenly found you had stolen?

I wouldn’t think Wolfe had latent envy to be worked on, but maybe when you’re stuck in the limelight it doesn’t matter?

    • SaberRoy

I think they are two different things. The people under the limelight are never shown to speak in green, and can’t do anything by themselves, while Ben speaks in green when taken by Envy and seems to be under his own power, just charmed into a certain way of thinking.

Ahahaha, I just realized that Envy is using limelights.

(Yes, yes, I know. It’s still got me greening…)

I knew a guy once who assumed that limestone was green, until I told him otherwise.

The first use of limelighting indoors was a few years later than this story – and the first ones were cumbersome, immovable and unreliable. These lights are presumably something magical or magically enhanced – perhaps glowworms with attitude?

  • Too bad no-one thought to bring a musket to shoot out at least one of the lights. Oh wait, they did, but someone grabbed it to take into O’Malleyspace, even though we all know you can’t physically harm a summons.

And Many Happy Returns Ms Ashwin.

Interesting, Wolfe is generally right handed.

Well, Envy’s picked his “hero”. Forcing Wolfe to fight with his off hand should help Envy get the outcome it seems to want.

  • D. Schwartz

As a martial artist (yes I do many things) Voss is at a severe disadvantage with only one eye since he lacks depth perception only somewhat helped by the fact he has had monocular vision for a some time.

Of course Envy is running the whole thing and literally pulling their strings so it really doesn’t matter I guess.

Except the loss of an eye could be dramatic reason for Envy to “even the odds”.

It’s a little more complicated than it seems. You actually get a lot of information about depth by moving your head, so it’s less of a disadvantage than you’d think when you’re at close quarters.

      • D. Schwartz

While true to a degree, that ability is limited when you are in a situation that keeps you from consciously gauging the depth of objects around you, versus the unconscious action it normally is. For example, a duel.

Now that Envy’s attention is elsewhere, I’m not thinking those handkerchiefs are going to detain a magician for long. Come to think of it, I expect that box is not long for the world either.

While I could see Vee being strong enough to smash the box, the problem is if she can get enough leverage to do so from the limted space inside. Though she might just have a gadget for such a situation.

The question in my mind is: can the swords cut the strings?

    • Frank Earl

No, but then, he can’t as readily control you without the Limelights…and he has only two to work with. Sid and Vee are out as is Ben. The two of them are tied up, but I suspect there’s about to be an ego boost for Ben here shortly as he grows more than a mere bit of a pair and shakes off the green funk he’s got going on.

Ultimate insult to Invidia…got your *ss kicked by the “nobody” you overlooked… >;-D

Traveling the last few days, I decided to re-read “Green-Eyed Monster” in anticipation for this page. This was a really good decision. Now that I’m able to access the comments again, it’s hard to decide what to comment… Like, Wolfe looks almost more upset than we’ve ever seen him before, I can’t imagine what he’s feeling… And, I like how Voss’s outfit is kind of a throwback to his earlier look when he came to town, and Wolfe’s is clearly based on his old army uniform…
But the first thing I really thought about when I saw this update is how much Ben’s expression in the last panel put me in mind of what happened back here: http://www.widdershinscomic.com/wdshn/january-23rd-2015/
Which is why I don’t believe there is any way Ben can just sit idly by for this one.

*edit: oh wait nvm I spotted someone who saw it too. It’s good to know the artist liked that game too, though!
