Mal is better than Voss because he has someone to stop his tantrum.

Hey, if you’re in Manchester this weekend, come to MCM Comic Con and say hi! Here’s a map here showing where I’ll be. Hint- it is right near the FOODS. Bring me a cup of tea, if you will. No sugar, just a splash of milk.

  • Stretch Longfellow

Since when is that “the usual” for them?

    • Qwefg Lockheart

Run from army with people wanting to kill you. Making money in poker with enchanted sight and flee when cops see you. Run from/into bugger ups because of crooked backroom dealing that resulted in a massive conspiracy. Better question is when did they stop?

  • XD This is fantastic. I love how everyone else is like “Umbrellas!” and Mal is like, “I’m so angry I will get soaked in the rain just to show exactly how frustrating life is right now!”

And then of course once he stops having a tantrum Wolfe is just like *siiiidleumbrella*

    • AJ

I’ve read dozens of webcomics with good art and funny stories, and Widdershins is one of five that I actually come back to, because of all these little character moments that really make it so much better than just a joke-a-day, “Oh, let’s play with historical stereotypes” comic.

    • das-g

Mal didn’t bring an umbrella of his own. He already came here side-umbrella’d by Wolfe.

And if he’d shout at Wolfe face-to-face while both under one umbrella, that’d be a bit too intimate and intimidating even for Wolfe to still feel comfortable. Even when angry, Mal wouldn’t confront his best friend like that, even if he has to get a bit wet to confront him differently.

      • River is right in that he’s partially doing it out of sheer bloodymindedness, however!

He’s already regretting it internally by panel 2.

  • Basil Sage

Wolfe is very pretty in the third panel.

However, I just remembered Envy came to Widdershins to look for a particular family (this could be any family, not necessarily the Barbers, but who are we kidding here), before it got completely distracted by Voss. I would like to know what is the status of the original plan now.

    • Nonesuch

Fortunately, it seems to have been postponed because Envy first couldn’t resist Voss’ hate-on for Wolfe, and then spotted O’Malley and recognized him as a keystone soul.

  • QueenBol

They are my Brotp forever. I mean, Wolfe already understands and trusts Mal so much. And that last panel, covering Mal with the umbrella. So much love for these bros.

    • Mari

That last panel is adorable <3

    • Here, here! And Wolfe has learned to depend on Mal for all his jaded mistrust needs, it seems. Love these two. Also love how even though Wolfe still smiles most of the time, his eyebrows don’t always agree. Seems he is indeed worried too.

  • Darkoneko Hellsing

Wolfe became much wiser in those few years, hm ?

    • Nightsbridge

Wolfe just learned to trust to trust a friend well. Business as usual, except THIS time he’s got a better friend.

      • Nonesuch

        Friends, yes? ;)

    • =Tamar

Wolfe has managed to be doubtful about Voss while still genuinely wishing him well. That’s quite a subtle distinction.

  • Sanjay Merchant

How is “proceeding with caution” in any way usual for this crew?

    • r2d2go

I think he means “proceed as usual, but with extra caution”.

      • ShakeJake

        I agree with this interpretation.

Example: This is the usual chocolate fondue. This over here however is the usual chocolate fondue WITH CHEESE.

Implying that what comes after with is a separate or new addition to whatever comes after usual.

  • . . . something able to hide someone’s true nature from Mal’s sight should be a significant clue that something very serious is happening . . .
    . . . and exasperated Mal is adorable . . .

  • Haven

Wolfe♦Mal. Just putting it out there.

    • Nonesuch

That notion seemed to rather distress Wolfe during the Q&A. :p

      • Pam

        Moirailleigance isn’t sexual, though.

  • Winger

Mal’s sarcastic impressions of people always draw a laugh out of me.

    • Basil Sage

Oh man, I can’t believe I just noticed that Mal imitates Wolfe’s accent when he yells at him. Adorable.

  • Words to strike terror into Mr O’Malley’s heart… ‘Hard Work’.

  • 4LS

Mal is better than Voss because he chooses to hang out with someone who will stop his tantrum … instead of, you know, someone who gives him evil superpowers! Also, loving panel 4 :D

  • Nonesuch

Wolfe is so awesome. ^^ That is all.

  • Nin

In practically any other story, Wolfe would be overshadowed by snarky Mal and book-smart Ben. You’re a great storyteller, making the unabashed nice guy just as interesting and compelling as his more conflicted companions.

  • Afrodiseum

Wolfe is his own ray of sunshine, what’s he need an umbrella for? :D

  • Pam

If Wolfe ever gets tired of the exorcism-and-making-sure-his-friends-don’t-swan-dive-off-the-deep-end business, he’d have a bright future as a diplomat.

    • ShakeJake

A diplomat would require more than smoothing over problems between people. He’d make a damn fine mediator though (is that the right term? For someone whom is sent to smooth out disputes and similar problems or feuds?). Maybe a negotiator, too. Granted, a negotiator would require not getting cheated, so he’d still require Mal for that.

  • Property_of_Deduction

I didn’t look at Mal’s eyebrows in the middle panel, and thought he was scared. I mean, it would be a bit out of character, but understandable as there were just faced with the man that shot him. Then I noticed the eyebrows and felt like an idiot. XD

  • Sarah W

At first I was thinking, “Why is Wolfe the only one with an umbrella!? This is so out-of-character, wouldn’t he just hand it to one of the others?”

Then I saw Ben had his own umbrella.

There, that’s everything taken care of. :P

  • Ciara

Man, Mal has horrific posture – no wonder hes so damned grumpy
