  • Priorities, Ben! Priorities.

  • Tikatu

Uh oh! Envy sees O’Malley as a problem! Wonder if Mal’s spastic little malform friend can spit out what exactly he’s talking about with “them” and “it”.

    • svartalf

Heh… The thing is…is Mal-o-Vision something that Envy can pilfer for Voss…or not…

      • Tikatu

Is Mal-o-Vision something Voss wants? Probably not!

    • Twales

The malform seems to be referring to Envy being one of the “them” which I can only assume is one of the seven deadlies. A couple strips earlier the malform said that Mal must send them back and I assume it means the deadlies. And I almost missed it until recently, but at the end of every chapter a different deadly sin has escaped. That’s my theory at least, since Mal and Wolfe’s chapter is the only one that clearly says that Sloth escaped. However the real question is: What happens when all the deadlies are released near Widdershins? I mean, Ben looked pretty freaked out about it in panel three here:

      • I am drunk so I may be wrong

Greed gained his freedom in ‘Sleight of Hand’.

      • Tikatu

Oh you’re right about what the malform is talking about; “them” refers to the seven deadlies. It’s just that the critter hasn’t been able to articulate this to O’Malley. As for Sloth’s escape, it may be referring to the circle where it was imprisoned once summoned. The circle was broken during the fire and let it out. Gluttony, on the other hand, seemed to be sent away to wherever the deadlies are now. At this point, I think it would have to be summoned to arrive at Widdershins. (Though it had a lot of free agency if it could create it’s own pocket universe connected to the Gula.)

  • Sanjay Merchant

Tut tut, Ben, bringing up such a vulgar topic as a shooting on this, clearly a reunion between gentlemen.

Also, Envy seems to have figured out Mal’s superpower. This will be a problem.

    • Cooper

Mal’s superpower being making fingerless gloves look good.

      • ShakeJake

The hobo gloves are back? The hobo gloves are back!

I use them for general drawing myself, but Mal doesn’t strike me as much of art enthusiast, so on his hands, they are +5 Vagrant Gloves of Escaping.

    • rainycity1

I was wondering if Mal’s ‘talent’ is an ability that can be stolen… and would Voss want it? and what would Mal think if he didn’t have it any more?

  • Swagner

Oh dear, I hope that seeing spirits isn’t the sort of thing that can be stolen!

    • David Argall

It likely can be, and it is likely it will be. But Mal has been rather upset with this ability and might welcome the “loss” while Voss regrets taking it.

  • Marvelous TK

Hooray! Voss apologizes and now everyone can be friends again! How refreshing to have a peaceful resolution to a story.

    • Neoriceisgood

Agreed, this was a fun arc! Nice to know it ended well. ^_^

    • Peterson

      YAY! Cookies for everyone!

  • KWill

Mal, old tales of getting shot… Stealth Firefly reference?

    • Mia

I think that’s an awesome notion :) Lets just assume that.

  • Winger

Dammit Mal, this isn’t a game of peek-a-boo, SHARPEN THOSE TURNING REFLEXES.

  • Heh. Is Mal gonna keep the little guy as a pet/helper? Sorta like Gren?

  • Ted

Please, please let Mal keep the psycho-sprite. They are perfect together. :D

  • Phil

Hmm, Voss is expecting Wolfe to become envious of his old “friend”, but Wolfe is just happy for him. I can only imagine this will make Voss even more jealous! Or even angry, will we see Anger make a cameo in this chapter?

    • If I understand the heirarchy rightly, Anger wouldn’t be as bad as Wrath. Now if WRATH showed up, we’d have two Deadlies in one room, and that’s just chaos and bad news for EVERYBODY.

      • Xanthipe

I have to admit, I’d assumed that’s who Mal’s ‘shadow’ is, hence the grimness and the short temper.

  • rainycity1

    I love Mal’s new friend! <3

  • Crud, now the fox knows he can see him. This makes the reveal much trickier. But probably also much more interesting.

My favorite part of this page is the last panel, where you can just see our crazy spirit of excitement/anxiety/freaking out (it’s gotta be one of those or something close) peeking his huge cartoony eyes over Jack’s shoulder. UGH HE’S SO CUTE

  • cake

from now on, I’m calling that guy “Tweek-Lizard.”

  • Duke of URL

So, if the green fox is the spirit of envy, the yellow whatsit must be the spirit of panic – When in danger, When in doubt, Run in circles, Scream and shout.

    • Panic, of course, why didn’t I think of that? I was sure it was either anxiety or hyperactivity. Or Freaking Out, which is totally an emotion. Panic sums it up quite well, though.

      • pingo1387

Which brings up the question of why someone tried to summon Panic in the first place, and if it was an accident, WHAT they WERE trying to summon.

    • Chryos

I want to thank you. Been catching up and reading the comments, and I think you’re the first person to use the word that first popped into my mind upon seeing our little yellow friend: panic.

Fret fret fret, spaz spaz spaz. Clearly in a state of sheer panic.

  • Deepbluediver

I wonder why some spirits look all regale and noble, while some look like they are the product of an 3-day peyote bender.

    • DocHarleen

      Well, he is a malform…

  • slim kittens

Voss is being truthful in panel 2. He HAS changed.

  • DocHarleen

Voss has been reminding me how insanely good Kate Ashwin is at facial expressions. I keep looking at panel three Voss, who’s all humblebrag. But Wolfe is just the best, because he’s sincerely happy for Voss and it wouldn’t even occur to him to envy another’s success. Voss, on the other hand, remains very punchable.

  • Mia

Can we keep the lizard thing, pleeeease?

  • Peterson

Dhow! That liddle fox is SO CUTE! I hope everything goes right for him!

  • davidbreslin101

ooohh…. Mal hasn’t really got a good look at Voss yet, so hasn’t seen the (presumably pretty nasty) state of his aura. And it’s Envy, not Voss, who knows about Mal’s talent- which may be some intelligence he doesn’t want to share.

    • rhapsha

Oh ya, I didn’t even think of that. Can Envy make someone’s aura not appear as it truly is? This could be setting up the same situation as 3 years ago when Mal told Wolfe about Voss. I should hope Wolfe would trust Mal now though.

And I do say Envy so far seems to be a fairly crafty deadly. He seems utterly bored with the situation, but was quick to notice and avoid Mal seeing him.

  • Ciara

There’s something vaguely sad about posting comments when all the rest are several years old – I feel like I’m sitting alone in a theatre, giggling and talking to myself :D
