Ok, so, I KNOW Superbia is a deadly sin and a villain and all… but it’s so damn nice seeing a woman that confident that I’m sort of rooting for her.

    • Sal

Are the Barber women not confident enough for you, or is it the bluster that’s really doing it for you?

      • Sanjay Merchant

Well, she is Pride, so her bark may indeed be worse than her bite. Plus, yes, the bluster is so marvelously campy that it’s worth it on its own, even if she does turn out to be a Miles Gloriousus-type.

      • kuku

The Barber women are terrific (and less boastful), but it’s fun to see even more butchy women. There’s a shortage in the media in general.

        • Qwefg Lockheart

I think she was the first inspiration to the Barber women. Also it’s more common to see strong females currently… but this was back then where it was even less common.

    • Confidence isn’t THAT rare, y’know.

  • Alexander Welch

I feel like she has theme music playing right now.

  • Fortunately for Ms Superbia, Mr Barber is far too much of a gentleman to ever dream of punching a lady. At least, that’s his story and he’s sticking to it.

    • Geoff

All the while, privately relieved that he didn’t have to face Ms. Ira and that cigarette holder…

    • Personally I’m not entirely convince that that isn’t actually BRIAN BLESSED!!!!! in drag

  • Tom

Lovely page as always. The fourth panel reminds me of a certain Alex Louis Armstrong… just missing the sparkles!

    • Jordan Hiller

Assuming they got along in that way, they’d make beautiful babies.

      • Yeah, Superbia would be perfect for Armstrong if it wasn’t for that little “evil” issue . . .

        • Jordan Hiller

          sigh… yeah.

    • Haha, you’re right! I can’t un-see the similarity now.

    • I was thinking that too! Well, actually I was thinking of his sister Olivia(r?), but she would fit right in with their family, no question! Fun page : )

      • Euodiachloris

She could have a go at taking Ms Ira out and replacing her… ;)

  • Darth Fez

Poor Henry. I bet Sid can relate to this part of the story.

  • Sanjay Merchant

Ms. Superbia: she will kick your ass and look damn good doing it.

  • Kitewinter

Hm, her sleeves aren’t completely flexed off, so she can’t be *that* good.
(damnit i love ms superbia, she’s glorious)

  • Sanjay Merchant

I suddenly have this mental image of Ms. Superbia strolling down the street singing “Quando m’en vo” while periodically taking out passersby with casual punches and kicks. It’s wonderful and I wish I were an animator so I could share it with you.

  • Bill Soo

Odd that while Luxuria and Superbia are named as such in the notes, Mr. Gula is still known as “the Butler”.

    • Haven

Presumably to keep consistency with his previous appearances, so you can just click through and see them all. (And it would be a pretty big spoiler if he was tagged that way in Piece of Cake, yeah?)

  • “My little ginger”, huh?

  • Hint: “Mon petit rouquin!” may fit better in French. ^_^

  • Shaderp

Is it just me, or is anyone else bothered by the fact neutral terms for women didn’t exist back then? I prefer them…but just wondering

    • Sanjay Merchant
      • Shaderp

Well colour me intrigued. Figures they’d take something good and sweep it under the carpet. Thanks for the info!

    • Euodiachloris

It got a revival in telegraph and Morse messages. For space reasons. :) Oh, and in some hoardings and advertisements, too… for the same. ;)

  • Darkoneko Hellsing

    Well we found the lady.

  • Scint

This technique just may be passed down the Armstrong line for generations.

  • Firedog

“This techniqe of unshirting has been passed down Armstrong family line for generations!”

  • MoeLane

…And you wondered why they devoted an entire day of training in teaching you how to dive through a window, Henry.

  • szbnahl

For some reason, Henry’s really reminding me of Mal. It’s probably just my imagination, but I reserve the right to be smug if Mal’s a distant Barber cousin.

  • Columbine

:o She’s PERFECT! Still jealous of her look, now also a little lustful. How many of the deadly sins can Superbia inspire me to? Is there a limit?

    • MoeLane

You might have to do some advance planning in order to achieve Sloth.

      • Alétheia

Naw, Sloth requires no planning; it’ll come last, naturally and without planning, when you realise that there’s no way you can ever achieve anything near Superbia’s perfection, and thus decide to just take a nap and not even bother trying.

        • Columbine

Is this the point where I say that I’ll be in my bunk? :P

    • Shaderp

      No limit. ;)

  • Phlebas

    Do I foresee a fall?

  • Pangaea

I’m pretty sure it will hurt her pride to be defeated by a ‘petit roux’.

  • Shee Soon Theng

Surprised no one mentioned the uncanny speed Butler Gula displayed in getting to the doorway.

    • Jonathan Trouba

What can you say? Gluttony’s a fast bastard when he wants to be. Early bird gets the worm and all that.

  • chaosvii

One does not need to hope for Ms. Superbia to cover for any troubles of yours. “Making up for it” is a magnificent understatement to describe what she does!

  • Sanjay Merchant

I kinda wanna mod Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out so that it’s Henry vs Superbia. :-P

  • Rulebook Lawyer

Ms. Ira: “All show, as always. For Invidia’s sake, use a gun; point and click, bang. Problem solved.”

    • Sanjay Merchant

Unless Luxuria wants Henry alive. I’d imagine Ms. Ira isn’t so good at “capture, not kill,” while Ms. Superbia just sees it as a chance to prove how awesome she is. If they were fencing, I’d fully expect an “I am not left-handed” moment from her.

  • Nonesuch

People who have really seen combat may wince at the notion of ‘glorious’ battle…

  • Michael Brewer

Something I’m still a little puzzled about is that the first three sins we’ve met in this series didn’t seem to be plotting anything in particular. Granted, Greed doesn’t give away information, Pride was accidentally summoned, and Sloth …well. So, I can get why they weren’t obviously plotting things out like Envy and Greed, but it still seems a bit odd to me.

  • impishacid

  • Wait, so PRIDE is the fighter? I would have expected Wrath. Interesting.

  • King

Reading through the comments make me happy that I’m not the only one loving Ms Superbia.

  • I find it rather odd that out of all the Seven Deadlies, Gluttony is the only one who isn’t ravenously gorging himself on the scenery

  • J_JamesM

The sins are ranked in order of severity. Pride is at the top, followed by Envy, Wrath, Sloth, Greed, Gluttony and Lust. Does that imply that Superbia and Invidia are the strongest?
