Neat news- This is the 500th page of Widdershins! That’s.. quite a lot of pages! Pretty neat, no? I feel like the comic has come a long way, and I’m really pleased with how it’s all been going, and mostly I’m just very thrilled that people seem to be having fun with it, so thanks for reading!

If you’re enjoying the comic and want to help it out a little, be sure to link it to anyone you think might enjoy it, while get to I work on the next 500 pages!

  • Amanda Wehrman

Congratulations on 500 pages! *throws glitter and streamers*

  • Darth Fez

“Gardener” is totally a euphemism for… uh… Watch out for the duck pond, Henry! >.> <.<

    Congrats on 500!

  • Michael Brewer

Congratulations! I know I’ve been enjoying it.

I confess, I’m not entirely sure why he’s going after the necklace at this point. I get that compassion says “find the wizard and warn/protect them” but, honestly, I’d like to see someone actually leave the macguffin in the trapped tomb behind all the security for once, instead of doing the villain’s dirty work for them.

    • Darth Fez

No doubt these things do happen, and Henry might well have left it at that if there weren’t some human cost involved by way of the wizard. However, these are the tales we don’t hear about or see because Henry sitting about in the club, sipping brandy, while wondering what the villains are up to doesn’t make for much of a story.

    • a) To get the bounty from the Royal Society
      b) To show them! To show them all!!

    • Liz

The Royal Society’s raison d’etre is getting dangerous magical stuff like this out of the public and into some private vault/destroying it. If beings as powerful as the ones Henry just encountered are after this necklace, it’s no doubt both dangerous and powerful, an needs to be put away/destroyed. Plus that wizard person is in danger.

At least, that’s his rationalization. In reality, he’s probably going for the bounty/glory.

    • David Argall

The standard reason/excuse is that “the old defenses are breaking down”. So leaving the macguffin means the bad guys are going to get it. It has to be moved to a new safe house. Now quite often, it seems like it’s the good guy who is breaking down the defenses, but these things are supposed to be a race and the wrong side will get there first unless the hero hurries.
Henry is somewhat following that model. He is not doing anything that requires great skill, and can easily assume the nasties can hire some less skilled people who will find the “wizard”. So he has to get there first, and persuade the “wizard” to move to someplace safer. The existing defenses are not going to be enough.
Now he ought to look behind him. His follower is not well hidden or disguised. Of course, that may be just the artwork. Henry may be looking a lot, but she is very skilled at avoiding notice. So the result is the same, and we might miss the theme that he is being closely followed. But it sure seems like he thinks he got completely away.

Either that, or the panels have been cleverly framed to show us a view that Henry can’t see ;-)

  • Ganurath

Calling it now: Ms. Invidia is going to be totes jelly when she sees the future Mr. and Mrs. Barber hit it off.

  • Darkoneko Hellsing

The socks near the fire :D

    • Sanjay Merchant

And the rest of his adventuring clothes, too.

    • kuku

Not having lived with fireplaces – this is the first time I’ve realized that Christmas stockings were not unusual in being hung by a fire!

  • Columbine

So many backgrounds on this page and it’s amazing. I love Henry’d little drying-off-again nook. And the huge view of the grand house. But the middle panel with Envy always there and Henry always smiling and charming is fantastic.

  • Odo

Congratulations on 500 pages. For however more there are, I will follow you. Oh, dear, that sounds a bit stalkerish, doesn’t it?

  • Euodiachloris

Invidia will have a harder time blending into the rose bushes and potting shed, I think. xD

    • Darth Fez

      Bring her… a shrubbery!

  • Sanjay Merchant

I’d love to see what sorts of spirits you conjure to be a floramancer.

Also, Invidia through the window in that center panel of the montage. Yup, she’s scary.

  • Sanjay Merchant

Also, I note the Official Date on this comic. Thanks for the birthday present. ;-)

  • TachyonCode

Ah, the window in the middle of panel 3… such a foreboding window.

  • Who, me?

Apparently, unlike his granddaughter, Henry is quite the charmer when he wants to be!

  • kuku

Congratulations – I’ve loved every one of those 500 pages! And i look forward to as many more as you want to draw (which I hope will be many)!

  • Stinemite

    Hi, all!
I apologize for the following giant block of text, but I have a bit of a theory that I would like to put forth, and I felt it was only fair to give my evidence as well. Also, I like to be a bit dramatic. Please bear with me.
Back during “Green Eyed Monster”, when Envy gets freed, she says “I am 6 of 7,” obviously referring to the various Deadlies who are already out and about. Now, including Envy and Wrath, we have seen 6 of the 7 and the obvious conclusion is that Wrath is part of that number. However, Envy doesn’t say that until freed, which Wrath doesn’t achieve, and wouldn’t she have then said “We are 6 of 7”? But if Wrath isn’t one of the 6 Envy is referring to then that would mean that Lust, the only Deadly we haven’t seen yet, is already cavorting about the town. Hmm.
Now in the flashback, we see Lust, who is apparently rather clever and the leader of the group. My guess: at the end of Find the Lady, they all get desummoned except Lust, who manages to escape. Whether or not Lust’s continued cavorting is known to the Barbers, I am not sure.
If Lust is already having his fun in Widdershins, then likely he would want to stick around the Barbers. I have two reasons for this assumption. One: obviously, the Barbers are important to whatever goal the Deadlies have in mind. Two: We can assume that the grandparents are the ones who foiled their plans last time and dangerous people bear watching. If that is the case, then the person Lust is posing as is likely to have been mentioned but not yet seen. Also, considering Lust’s, well, lust for the finer things in life, he is probably someone who has at least some minor standing and influence, and more than a little cash in the bank. The person who best fits all of those requirements is… Mr. De Montfort. Florrie’s husband. Well, snickerdoodle.

    • Sanjay Merchant

      AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH!!!!! DANGER! DANGER!

GET OUT OF THERE, FLORRIE! GET OUT OF THERE!!!!

      • Stinemite

OK, first off, I love this comment for its own sake, but half the time I read it, all I can think of is: “Danger, Will Robinson! Danger!

        • Sanjay Merchant

Well, that’s good, because that’s what I had in mind when I wrote it.

Well, that and this (it should go to 3:30, but if it doesn’t that’s where the relevant bit is): https://youtu.be/WCSKXugQrP0?t=3m30s

          • Stinemite

Well, good news is that it did go straight to 3:30. Great news is that I enjoyed that immensely and am greatful for the link.

    • Columbine

Oooooooo that is an interesting theory.

    • Disloyal Subject

      Plausible.

    • tali

      Ooooh, that totally plausible:)

    • kuku

      Interesting!

    • S.K. Ren

I don’t know, what if Lust is a sleeper right now? Ya’ know, hidin’ an’ stuff. Florrie seems to be pretty hedonistic… maybe Lust is even closer to the Barbers than you surmised?

      • Sanjay Merchant

Florrie and the Anchor of Doom?

        • Darth Fez

Is that a euphemism for spouse? Is that why Florrie wants to get everyone hitched? >.>

Thank you! Thank you! I’ll be here all week. Try the veal.

          • Sanjay Merchant

(Actually, I was trying to adapt the title “Lufia and the Fortress of Doom” to Widdershins.)

      • Stinemite

I am intrigued, sir/madam (soory, your name is not exactly gender specific and that is all I have to go on). Do you have any other evidence, or is this hypothesis?

        • S.K. Ren

Just a simple conjecture at the moment. And Sir will do.

  • Shee Soon Theng

Oh, so Harry took over his place once she got into the business herself. Certainly convenient in not having to change the name sign… Also interesting how the fireplace equipment was upgraded in two generations.

    • Was hoping someone would notice that! She did indeed install a range with every intention of cooking on it, though she never quite got around to that.

    • Darth Fez

Oho, hyu iz a schmott guy!

      • NinjaKitten

You don’t happen to read Girl Genius, do you?

        • Darth Fez

Aye, I’m still catching up. I dread the day when I’m up to date and must wait for updates like a mere mortal.

          • NinjaKitten

It’s a great comic! Unfortunately, I am one of the mere mortals who are forced to wait. *sigh* Worth it though! The Jaegers are the best.

            • Toastgoblin

They are! In fact I’ve been persuaded to write and run a Jaegers RPG next weekend for some friends. It has Hat mechanics ^_^

              • Darth Fez

My hat is off to you, sir.

              • Hat mechanics?
                So . . . different hats bestow different qualities/bonuses?
                Cool.
I have always believed in the power of hats!
(another fan of Girl Genius with a fondness for Jaegers, particularly Maxim)

            • Clinton Richard Rice

Been reading GIrl Genius since it was actually a comic book. Back then, we had to wait around 4 months (or more. the schedule was really erratic) for an update. So stop crying over waiting 48 hours :P

              • NinjaKitten

Alright, you win, I’m just a big baby. But hey, we all find the cool stuff eventually. Some just find it later, and at a time when stuff updates frequently! ^-^

  • Disloyal Subject

    500, already?
    …wow. Here’s to 500 more, then!

  • BaronHaynes

    Next 500? Nice!
For some reason, my assumption was that the comic would wrap up with chapter 7; it felt like the end of 5 and the progression of 6 were setting the stage for the endgame. But I guess there’s no reason that has to be the case. Looking forward to more!

  • S.K. Ren

Ms Invidia needs to work on her tailing skills. She can be seen in panels 2-5. For shame.

  • Hooray for 500 pages! :)
