    Voss is a jerk. D:

    • ShadeTail

One of the few things he *is* good at…

  • Ted

Does that mean he cannot keep what he can already do (as in, he will lose what he already does)? If so, he’s in trouble with that whole breathing, eating, heart beating thing.

  • Istas

Voss just stole two men’s entire livelihood, jackass. He doesn’t even own that instrument!

  • Nightsbridge

I wonder, since Voss already has musical talent, can he not steal Wolfe’s anymore?

    • KWill

      Different instruments, no?

  • Cursor90

Envy is turning out to be the most devious deathly sin yet. He seems to be based off of the fox reheard and iago from Othello

    • reynard61

Do you mean “Reynard”? (Where my internet name comes from, BTW.) Reynard was a trickster (and, admittedly, a bit bloodthirsty; not something I try to emulate), but I can’t recall him purposefully depriving anyone of their livelihood. This sin has basically turned Voss into a parasite.

      • http://wiki.urbandead.com/index.php/User:Jerden Jerden

        And parasites are amazing!

        • reynard61

As one who has had actual parasites infesting/attached to him at various times in his life (ticks, fleas, lice, leeches), I can tell you that they are most certainly *NOT* amazing. (Itchy and/or possibly disease-inducing, maybe; but *NOT* amazing.)

  • Tikatu

I bet he even takes the granny’s talent for knitting! Jackass indeed!

  • fairportfan

Hmmm. If he’s gonna face Mal and Wolfe in Widdershins, it better take him a while to get there, because they have to wander through Europe some, and then deal with Sloth before Envy and Voss can get a crack at them.

Maybe this will be Captain Barber’s case, with some help- from the others…

  • pingo1387

Geez, Voss is even more of an a-hole than before.

    • Bill Soo

They say that power corrupts but I like to think it emphasizes what was already there.

      • Disloyal Subject

        A la Captain America?

  • Sparky

I can’t wait for him to take Mal’s ability to see spirits.

    • Bill Soo

Mal has an inate ability, not a skill. I don’t think envy can steal that. A similar question is whether Voss can steal skills that are based on a physical attribute. For instance, he meets the worlds strongest man; can he steal that strength without changing his own physique?

      • Qwefg Lockheart

But I believe Mal’s “Spirit sight” was given to him. He had said it wasn’t a natural born ability and that some wizard ended up causing it. Besides Voss could properly find a lot more other useful talents along the way.

      • Jordan

I’m guessing that it needs to be something that would be based on muscle memory or memorization (something of that sort). Being physically strong isn’t a talent, it’s just a buildup of muscle and knowing how to apply it. So if Voss met someone who was a skilled weightlifter, he’d be able to know exactly how to do the lifts etc, but not necessarily be able to do them. On the other hand, he may be able to steal someone’s coordination or their ambidexterity.

  • NoemZ

How sinister! I really like where this story is going. ;-)

  • awhorl

I’m thinking of the tale of the Golden Goose, where everyone ends up stuck and following in a chain of people. It won’t take long for at least some of the people who are robbed to figure out that Voss was the last person they saw before they lost whatever it was. Especially if he is prone to self-congratulatory remarks during the robbery. He’s going to have quite a posse looking for him.

And woe betide Voss should he “rob” a con man–don’t stop at Baden, fella, and try to “absorb” whatever it takes to win and take all at the casinos, whether it be in money or in attention from the ladies you find there. He who loses the particular faculty you gain will certainly notice your sudden accession to power, draw some conclusions, and act.

Well, that’s one way to get a bit of peace and quiet in the pub…

  • Darkoneko Hellsing

    …crap :(

  • Elizabetonth

NOOO! BAD. BAD thing to do.

  • Hornet

Interesting, didn’t realise that in stealing a skill the orginal owner lost said skill.

    • Disloyal Subject

That is how stealing tends to work.
Though despite expecting it to function that way, I’m surprised at how much my dislike of Voss has increased on seeing him actually do it. Solid bump up from pity/contempt to loathing.

  • Volkai

Oh hey look! Voss found something he’s good at — being a villain.

It’s great that he found his calling, isn’t it?

  • 4LS

Well done, Kate! Forget studio fires and corrupted back-up files, with Voss you’ve made the new ‘Artists Worst Nightmare’.

  • Winger

Ohh boy, he’s fixing to be a real one-man talent show, isn’t he? Maybe he’ll make the mistake of stealing Wolfe’s talent for being incredibly nice and immediately repent! Hah :|

  • CyberSkull

When he takes the talent, does he take the underlying structure of the brain that has it from the victim?

  • r2d2go

It’s interesting how the musician’s music changed to green – presumably because he SWITCHES abilities with that person. So he’s not quite unstoppable – in the long term, he can only steal so many skills before he’s just improving himself slightly and making someone else slightly worse.

  • Sanjay Merchant

Man, Voss is sure taking the burn from Envy in stride. Seriously, E, the man is your ride, try not to piss him off too badly.

    • fairportfan

He’s not taking it in stride – he didn’t even notice it.

Not the sharpest knife in the drawer, our Voss.

  • Succorelle

What an amazing villain you’ve set up here! I am thoroughly impressed. Creative AND complex. Nothing better than a story with a genuinely menacing villain whom you love to hate! <3

  • http://betterknowachildballad.wordpress.com/ Djiril

Well, this is a good reason to learn more than one language. So you can still talk if someone magically steals the first one!
