I love that smirk in the third panel.

    • tali

I was just gonna say that!

    • John

Henry’s expression is amusing, but I can’t help but think that the fact that Henry would have kept using the pipe and Harry didn’t indicates that Harry is more prudent than Henry is.

      • TheGorram Batguy

Being more prudent than Henry? Not exactly a high bar to cross, is it?

  • Jumpy Joey

Binge-reading webcomics is getting all too normal for me, I’m afraid. But what can I do when they’re as exciting as Widdershins! You’ve got yourself a new follower, ma’am.

…I may be developing a bit of a crush on Mal…

    • SandstormSinger

Mal is the best! I can’t wait to see him and Wolfe again.
      Welcome to Widdershins!

      • Jumpy Joey

Ooh I can’t wait either. Something tells me Mal won’t be all that pleased to find out he’s Widdershins’ new witch, but Wolfe will see it as a career opportunity.
Thanks! I’m gonna like it here!

    • Haha, thanks for reading :) Hope you enjoy the rest, too!

    • Afraid? Afraid of what?

That you might become one of us Archive Crawlers?
We antisocial loners marching through webcomic archives as one might a graveyard, looking upon the faces of the past and remarking upon history in the passing… to barely touch upon the present briefly before moving on to another archive, another slice of time…

But no… for unlike our counterparts, the Update Chasers, we cannot dedicate to a single webcomic… rather finding ourselves favouring many or all. And each time we hit the present and the pages end… we have to let go again, with the understanding that we won’t know how it progresses for months or years…

  • S.K. Ren

    Heh, poor Wrath.

  • Was the binding of Wrath by Mal with Wolfe’s help a lasting one? Or do they still need to take care of it?

    • Since The O’Malley is the new Witch of Widdershins, it might be permanent.

      • Tsapki

True. Also it was a Malform of Wrath so the rules might be different there.

      • rainycity1

(Poor Mal. I can just see how he is going to take this news…)

        • “Yer a witch, O’Malley!”
          “No I’m bloody not!”

    • They still need to take care of it.

      • Yeah, so, they got nothing “touched” by it.

  • Qwertystop

    Sorry, “liar’s heart”?

  • Don’t worry too much about a comic only a day or so late.

It’s here. Was beginning to worry about you – you’ve been so reliable the lapse seemed as if it might be bodeful.

    • Ahh it was rather my fault, I had an extra bit of work and didn’t plan around it properly. Had the honour of being invited to talk to some comics students at Staffordshire University on Friday, they’re doing some really exciting stuff there! And then I failed to get my page done ahead of time, so now here I sit, having slept for 14 hours to make up for it. On the plus side, I have cake.

      • Yay for the honour, and double yay for cake!

  • Why did Nora’s friend mention Harry specifically?

Because she knows her family history?

    • Tsapki

Chances are that Harry is the most famous in the future. Bounty Hunter tends to be more adventurous than police work and Nora, Eddie, Florrie’s career choices don’t sound too exciting on a passing read either.

      • That’s what sort of i meant – however, i also meant that Alexa knows her OWN family history.

        • Nightsbridge

Alexa may not be a Barber, let’s be fair.

          • Bet me she’s not a descendant.

            • JWLM

Well, there’s someone here who can answer the question. Kate? Is Alexa a Barber? Does it matter?

        • JWLM

I actually don’t think she knows the history in detail. Remember that she has to look Nora up at the end of _Piece of Cake_

  • EJ

The secret origin of Harry’s Pipe.

That was four years ago! Wow.

    • Sanjay Merchant

Never noticed before that after Greed zaps it, Harry’s pipe smoke is a little bit greener than normal.

    • So do we call that “touched” by Greed or “blessed” by Greed?

  • Disloyal Subject

Oh, yay; comic! I was starting to worry, but Daughter of the Lilies’ continuing break reminded me that artists have to sleep once in a while.
Hm. Still need a link to Wrath… unless Wolfe and O’Malley somehow made it stick…

  • Siva Smith

    Greed and Gluttony… no Slothifact?

    • Nightsbridge

      the lamp oil.

    • Meh, why go to all the trouble?

  • Siva Smith

Maybe Wrath isn’t needed because already taken care of?

    • Euodiachloris

Nicola isn’t bad at being an anger-generator… although, something a little more artifacty might be needed. :/ Some weapon might be knocking about, though…

  • That last panel of Harry and Nicola looks like poster material. ; ) Loving seeing all this come together!

  • Have a good relaxing break… catching up with all the last Kickstarter pledges and planning the next one… :-)

  • Nightsbridge

I like how it highlights the difference between Harry and Henry, with Henry, who relies on his luck gladly and carefree, and Harry, who resents it and would rather be able to go without it, and approach with caution.

  • Mal? Why is everybody in love with Mal, huh?

On February 1st, 2012, Kate wrote: Who are these jerks anyway, I hope they don’t show up in a later storyline.

  • Shee Soon Theng

Just looking back through the archive, the first pipe is different, having a bit of pronounced lip around the bowl, whereas this one is presumably the same one in use in chapter three with no apparent difference.

  • AJ

So again, why did she mention Harry specifically. If the bloodline was all she meant, Nora would have done as well.

    • Shee Soon Theng

Nora did not specify that this is future info; all Alexa knew is that Harry is the one credited with this whole affair. Izzy is simply drawing to the natural conclusion that would make sense to them at this point in time.

      • Me-me

WE know that, but THEY don’t know that.

        • Shee Soon Theng

I’m not sure as to why you felt the need to paraphrase my comment.

    • billydaking

Because Alexa had just found out that Harry was Nora’s sister. She didn’t recognize the Barber name right away until Nora mentioned that her grandfather was a famous adventurer:

Remember that Alexa is from the future, so she knows the events of the past. She mentions Harry specifically because she knows Harry did something with it; Alexa may have not known about the other Barbers’ involvement. It also doesn’t change the logic of what Isabelle is saying.

  • Turnip the Scintillating

Because Harry is awesome and the Big Damn Hero. Nicola is clearly more of the straight laced cop type that grumbles and kicks bad guy ass but is too tightly wound to be the Big Damn Hero, Florrie and Edmund both seem to have the temperament of a golden retriever, and Nora is a precious cinnamon roll. That’s why Harry has to do it. Unless the children do it, PLOT TWIST?

  • Columbine

The third and last panels are my favourites. It’s Henry’s casual ‘coulda learnt to live with that’ and the looks Harry and Nicola are exchanging. Beautiful character beats.

Out of curiosity how do you decide which panels get a fully detailed background and which are flat colour?

    • It depends on a lot of things- I have to have established the background already, so at the start of a scene there’ll always be detail back there. Then I can use flat colour if I feel like it’d clutter the panel, or if I’d rather you were concentrating on the character and their dialogue, or if I’m just getting a little tired. Gotta have background if there’s a big distance between the characters speaking, or if people are moving around the place (just to keep everyone’s whereabouts established), if someone’s interacting with the background, or if the shot is pulled back far enough.

Those are my general rules, it’s really a case-by-case basis thing though!
