The white boxes with green circles are magical loudspeakers?

    • Sanjay Merchant

I wonder what spirits are in those.

      • AJ

Enthusiasm? Attention-seeking? (Is that an emotion?) Neediness?

      • Sir. Orc

        Subtlety.

      • Irritation, annoyance and insomnia.

        • Sanjay Merchant

I have a feeling all of those are in abundance when Nicola Barber’s on duty.

  • Ghostdanser

“A riot is an ugly thing…und I think that it is just about time that we had one!” – Inspector Kemp

  • Darkoneko Hellsing

Gee people, get ladders already !

    • Sanjay Merchant

Really, if they have the right people in that mob, a flexible stick will do: https://xkcd.com/852/

      • Rachel McGonagill

There really is an xkcd for everything!

        • Darkoneko Hellsing

          *nod*

        • AJ

Everything the internet is likely to talk about, anyway.

I defy you to produce an xkcd relevant to historical costuming or….
          ……
I kept thinking of things and then eliminating them because there was an xkcd relevant to them.

          • LA Julian

            Did you say historical costuming?

            https://xkcd.com/623/

(of course it’s hard to tell, what with all being stick figures, but still…)

            • AJ

              ‘Ats a stretch, that is.

          • rainycity1

I am thinking of a specific XKCD, but I haven’t been able to find it yet. I’ll come back and post it if/when I do.

    • Killersquirrel66

Fortunately, the larger the mob of people the less intelligent the mob acts. Counter-intuitive, really.

  • BaronHaynes

Sometimes I feel like this guy stays pretty busy in this century, too.

    • Alétheia

He has a house in America, currently. x.x

      (Save. Us. Please.)

      • Sanjay Merchant

Well, him and Pride have sort of a buddy comedy going on right now. And, like most comedies, it’s not very funny to the characters living in it.

Envy and Sloth have done a lot of the prep work, though.

        • Ghostdanser

Ya know…when you frame it that way…rather than trying to decide if Wrath or Pride is the lesser evil, the Purple Hippo of Happiness is looking pretty good as a write in candidate.

          • Dunno why the comment above yours got deleted, fyi, it was not me!

            • Sanjay Merchant

I (author of said comment) did it myself. I thought better of wading into a conversation touching on politics in one of the few places on or off the internet I can go and not be bombarded with talk about the election.

(That, and I think the comment was perhaps misunderstood, but, again, I don’t really want to get into that.)

              • Ah hah! Fair, I’d rather not get into such things here either!

              • Coldesta Lelast – Sorceress

Oofh I know the feeling. I’ve caught myself once or twice in comment sections of webcomics I like typing out sphiehls and comments on things, then slowly pressing ctrl+a then Delete because “Do I really want to bring real life experiences and my job into this and cause the comment section to go beyond thermonuclear, maybe even accidentally cause cold fusion?” I got accounts on a few forums where I go into detail about stuff like that and these places are where I can go pretend to be a chaotic Erisian and evil centuries old witch at war with my evil sister over a simple EYE PENCIL I NEVER GOT BACK YET YOU BLIGHTING BLOSSOM!

Ahem, sorry I let the mask come off a bit.

                • In fairness, a good eye pencil is worth hanging on to.

                  • Euodiachloris

Shame it’s the naff ones that manage to not disappear in taxis or busses… :P

                  • Coldesta Lelast – Sorceress

I’ve nearly started wars over a missing eyeshadow pallet. Ask the people of Lemuria.

Oh that’s right, you can’t anymore.

                • Shihchuan

Hey, if it accidentally caused cold fusion, I’m all for it. ;)

      • AJ

I think he’s got a manor, a summer house, a beach house, and a couple of condos.

  • Odo

I love how you can convey identity and reaction in a miniature silhouette. Your art has been steadily improving.

  • Sanjay Merchant

The only thing worse than an angry mob is a magically enhanced angry mob.

    • LA Julian

God, it’s like that S3 episode of Luther.

      THAT one.

(No, an angry Nicola would not be helpful at this juncture.)

  • Sanjay Merchant

+10 speed when rushing to judgement, advantage on Jump checks for reaching conclusions.

  • ThisCat

Pride is at the university XD
Of course it is. Of course. WHere else will you find such a large collection of people who know they’re better than everyone else?

    • AJ

Political congresses, some large churches, and a goodly number of scientific conventions.

      • Sanjay Merchant

Well, the bulk of attendees at a scientific convention work at universities, so I don’t know that that one counts as separate.

        • AJ

I did think of that… but I was trying to be non-partisan. I’d already accused churches and lets be honest, anywhere people are gathered, they are likely to consider themselves better than the people not gathered.

      • rhapsha

Well in this setting. I’d go where all the wizards are personally.

        • AJ

Goodness, yes! This is Widdershins, where wizards are extra-special!

      • Darkoneko Hellsing

        oh man, that was perfect.

        • AJ

In response to your comment, I felt smug, which is the first step on the path to believing that you are better than someone. OBJECT LESSON, guys.

      • Sir. Orc

You forgot newsrooms, or whatever the 18th-century equivalent is.

  • Dane 72

Who is that guy yelling “Worr”?

    • Sanjay Merchant

It’s just the wind through the trees! “worrrr…. crikeeeeeey……”

    • LA Julian

      RHUBARB! RHUBARB!

  • My first thought was ‘Lucky Captain Barber wasn’t on duty, otherwise she would have opened the gates and handed out nooses to the mob’. But of course that’s nonsense. No way would she allow the prisoners to be lynched out of hand. She wants them to be tried, sentenced and hanged by due process of law.

    • Sanjay Merchant

If anyone could intimidate a supernaturally provoked mob into dispersing, it’d be Captain Barber.

      • AJ

I dunno. She’s been pretty bad so far at successfully intimidating even one main character.

        • Sanjay Merchant

Yes, but most of those have been Barbers. ;-)

          • AJ

I don’t think she even really intimidated Wolfe.
            ….Maybe Ben.

            • Sir. Orc

She managed to scare Wolfe a bit at the end of Green-Eyed Monster, which aside from her interrogation of Mal, and her conversations with Voss, was the only time we’ve really seen her making an effort to be intimidating beyond her usual cheery demeanor. It’s just that Mal can read her like an open book and knows when she’s just all bark and when she’ll bite, and Voss knew she couldn’t touch him.

Nicola can be scary when people are not expecting her to be scary and when the playing field is more level.

              • rainycity1

                ‘cheery’ is code-talk, right? ;-)

                • Sir. Orc

I have no idea what you are talking about. I was of course remarking upon Miss Nicola Barber’s natural sunny, forgiving, and friendly disposition towards all. Especially Mal. ;)

  • Well don’t just stand there Thackerey! Weaken it!

    • non_canon

Two thoughts came to mind when I read this comment.

      1. The caption to this ( http://www.widdershinscomic.com/wdshn/may-21st-2012/ ) comic and that while Mal’s not there I’m sure Verity could fill in.

      2. The image of them deciding to do with Wolfe’s calmness like they did with Nora’s courage and Ben just going “right, okay, Wolfe I need your..” and trailing off to first try to gesture above Wolfe’s head to indicate his aura before gesturing above his own head. And then, when that just gets him blank stares and worried looks, just giving up and going “Stand here and be yourself, I’ll do the rest.”

      • Tikatu

I foresee Sid’s almost-unwavering cheerfulness helping out at some point, too.

    • Pangaea

Thackery, just show yourself and remind Wrath that it has failed to kill you twice. Then ask him if it would like to strike out a third time. The blow to its pride would… Oops, wrong sin.

Well, at least Wrath can’t be made any angrier by its failed attempt to kill you, right?

      • Tikatu

Problem with that is there are entirely too many weapons–aka people–around who would easily do the deed for him.

  • non_canon

Oh Wolfe, bless you for trying so hard to do the smart thing.

  • Zephra85

Oh my gosh. Wrath looks… he just looks so darn HAPPY. Like a kid in a candy store. How do you say no to that face?

  • Ah, worr, the battle cry of the people.

  • Topical!

  • Sanjay Merchant

I wonder if Ben’s going with the idea that they have to de-summon/bind/otherwise subdue the most recent summon first?

  • Tyfariel

    WORR!
