Pretty certain there’s a legal requirement for someone to say ‘You’ll never get away with this!’ now.

Oh, here’s some nice news! If you like reading your comics on iPad or tablet or whatever, the first Widdershins story is now up on comiXology! I’ll be submitting the second soon, too. Futuristic!

Support the comic, buy some neat swag!

“You’ll never get away with this!!” Oh, Sid’s s’posed to say that in Harry’s stead. >:-D

Heh…I think it’s pretty clear which Deadly she’s going to inadvertently summon now…

    • Marvelous TK

I bet on Gluttony in the beginning, before we actually knew anything about the chapter, and dammit, my horse may have three broken legs, two sprained ankles, a gaping headwound, and has been running in tiny circles since the gate opened, but I’ll still cheer it on!

maybe she’s, like, really really hungry, right?

      • JediaKyrol

        I figured Envy…because…green…everywhere!

        • …and “If there wasn’t any magic, I’d be more important than you!”

          • svartalf

Oh, that’s not the way I’m seeing this… She’s “freeing” the magic, not destroying it…

        • svartalf

Envy or Pride… I’m leaning towards Pride based on the monolouge.

  • I knew it! She’s a Spark! Cue the maniacal gloating laughter!

    • Snowflake

No no no no no! She’s not a Spark, and she’d hate Sparks for all the same reasons she hates wizards – “It’s so random. You’re born with the knack of it to some degree or you’re not”.
So no, she’s not a Spark. She’s Doctor Merlot.

  • Marek

Sounds very much like Pride it will be.

    • I’m betting on Envy.

      • SleepingDragon

Lei becoming really, really angry (and you won’t like her when she’s angry) when Vee gets free and Harry shows up and the trio starts to get in the way of all her plans is still an option but right now Pride or Envy seem to be things going for her. I get more of a pride vibe for some reason but that may be just me and I do wonder if the green clothing isn’t meant to be a hint… I may or may not be overthinking this.

        • ” I may or may not be overthinking this.”

That’s what these forums are for.

    • Nonesuch

Egad. What if it’s both? o_o

  • Cooper

So she’s planning on showing how magical she is by using technology to blow up the anchor. Huh.

    • More like how magical she doesn’t need to be.

      • Cooper

Oddly enough, I like it when a villain is so crazy their reveal speeches don’t make much sense to their audience.

  • nemryn

You’ll never get away with this, Kate!

  • =Tamar

Vee has awfully sharp fingernails. Maybe she’s worked with Lei long enough to know something useful about those robots.

  • Volk0v

I bet Vee will use her hair wrench to remove the Robot’s arm.
    Or something.

  • SleepingDragon

Okay, so here’s something that’s bothering me a tiny bit, not sure if someone mentioned it in the comments… if the anchor is so very, very important it is under surprisingly little guard. I mean, even without the clockwork men it would only take someone a few dedicated, similarly minded people to do this and poof, magic’s gone. What’s more, if they let tourists in there it’s enough one of the out of town people has, unknowingly, a strong enough gift for magic and they can summon something nasty by accident… I’m not even going to get started on a chance of some megalomaniac with some talent and illusions of grandeur… yeah, I don’t see a few guys by the ticket booth being all that’s posted to this place.

So long story short I fully suspect there is some other security layer that either hasn’t been triggered yet, or someone watching and either waiting for a chance for that “one shot that counts” or counting the party can still handle it without them having to reveal themselves.

    • Me-me

There were guards, but Vee took them all out. I imagine whatever internal security exists was also taken out or otherwise distracted and don’t forget, despite being a magical centrepiece Widdershins is a small town with not much crime, so for a royal visit it would make sense for a large section of the local enforcers to be on crowd control and otherwise royal protection.

Monarchs are serious business in monarchies!

      • SleepingDragon

I guess? On the other hand the anchor is public knowledge all over the country from what I understand, I’m surprised the whole town isn’t one big military camp with government people trying to figure out how best to tap into it, can it be reproduced and so on…

Now, I don’t really hold it against the story, it may be that the Widdershins world is simply more of an adventurous place and doesn’t really follow the bitter, cynical reality of our world, and that’s okay if the story sticks to this setting. That and I fully expect the issue of what the anchor actually is, how it came to be and what was done with it will be explored in later stories. So far it’s done an excellent job of revealing the information one bit at a time, every now and then we get some pieces of the puzzle (like “there are wizards and they summon spirits” “it only works near Widdershins” “spirits can run free but most of them don’t really want to be here” “there are special spirits called deadlies” and so on) and I have a lot of fun trying to figure out what the whole picture is going to be every time I get a new one.

        • I also wonder if whether you summon something has to do with intensity/focus of the emotion. Lei seems like she’s letting out a lot that’s been pent up here, so there’s a much more intense emotion. Maybe when tourists come, they’re all feeling slightly different things, so anything they accidentally summon is small or unfocused. Also I’m betting they’re a lot closer than most tourists get.

  • Nonesuch

Hmmm. So, Harry was shot with a gun she gave to someone who she never met herself before, and who she did not know could reliably use it. Yeah, right. ;)

  • SoItBegins

    Not Envy. Pride.

  • Lleyn

May I ask something? Why are you all so convinced she’ll summon a Deadly? I mean, did I miss something? Wouldn’t she be required to consciously summon it, something that she does not seem likely to do, given her adversity to magic? Also, surely she doesn’t have the necessary skills to summon a Deadly? Color me confused.

    • Marie P

I think everybody is looking toward magic, but, this is Lei. She likes gadgets, is proud of her gadgets….and she’s got the dynamite all set up!
On the otherhand, it seems possible to accidentally summon a Deadly, and if it’s pride or envy, boy, she’s got to be summoning full strength right now.

    • It was indicated earlier that anyone with wizard talent who is this close to the anchor can accidentally summon a spirit simply by feeling a strong emotion.

Also, so far we’ve had two stories where a Deadly has shown up/gotten free near Widdershins and, apparently, if all seven were to get free near there it would be …bad.

Classic Mad Engineer! Mwahhahaha! I like it!
