  • CountSessine

Welp. He’s not dead yet. That’s something.

    • Darkoneko Hellsing

Yep. But even with first aid, there may not ne anyone nearby to help them.

      • CountSessine

Izzy may look like a frail old woman now, but for this she will find the strength. She will carry him to help if she has to.

        • She’s also a wizard/mage/what-have-you . . . healing magic, anyone?

          • Me-me

And look, there’s a nearly-complete circle, right there! How convenient. And, what’s this? Someone might be filled with compassion nearby! Who’d’ve thunk it!

Of course this is all speculation.

    Here’s hoping he’s a left-side-hearter.

    • Um, all standard humans have their hears to the left of center. It’s the right-siders that are exceptionally rare. So it’s a rather safe bet that he’s lefty.
Hence my “high on the right” comment on the previous page.

  • McNutty

It is a rare occasion that I wish so badly for two badass adults to beat the crap out of an old woman.

    • Haven

They’re all old, it’d basically be a two-on-one version of that fight from Up.

      • D. Schwartz

Wait you think the main characters are old? How odd.

        • Phil

Well Henry and Izzy are. They have 5 adult grandchildren, so must be at least 60-70 odd!

          • Stephen E Wilson Jr.

Back the days people had kids much younger. So not really *that* old. But dunno how things are in the widdershins world.

Yeah but they meant all of them so I can assume the writer is 12 and to them people in their 20’s are “old”.

  • It’s kind of subtle here, but I really love the continued reinforcement that Izzy’s connection to the girls is really more important than Henry’s. If this were pretty much any other sort of media, you’d expect it all to be about their connection to Henry (and you did a great job leading us on in the beginning, because what we first notice is that our girls all share the Barber name), and for Izzy to be a passive character, if present at all, but instead she’s the key! She’s important! She has agency! She contributes so much! I just find it really refreshing! So kudos to you, and thanks so much for all that! :)

Also, Izzy’s game face in panel five. Love.

    • Me-me

I wouldn’t say she’s more important. I’d say they’re both just concerned grandparents. Partners, as it should be. The reason Izzy has been the focus of the last chapter is because it was her ancestor’s spell.

Also, don’t downplay the contribution of a character who literally just took a bullet for the safety of others. Disrespectful.

      • Ah, sorry, I was afraid I was going to come off that way, but I don’t mean to downplay Henry’s contribution to the story. What I was trying to get at was less in terms of Izzy and Henry’s personal relationships to the girls, but their plot-wise effects on them. (If that makes sense). Obviously without Henry they wouldn’t be who they are, but the reason the deadlies are so interested in them is because of Izzy. Henry honestly just kind of stumbled into her story (and stayed, and became himself an integral part, but it started with Izzy).

I’m just really a fan of the role switching Kate’s done with them. Even this scene is the sort of thing I could easily see happening in some mainstream media with the woman taking a bullet so the man can go on and fight.

  • Ganurath

Oh, look. Someone just dropped a weapon infused with wrath and left it unattended. I wonder if someone could make use of such a thing?

    • Swagner

An unloaded weapon. and I figure if they were carrying powder and balls around, they’d also have guns of their own…

      • More like “someone” is Nicola or Harry.

      • D. Schwartz

But it’s not it’s status as a weapon but it magical imbuedness that is key here. Which makes it a weapon of another sort.

    • maeverin

Apparently I have the dumb today because I don’t understand the “infused weapon” part. Can someone please explain?

      • John

At the end of the last chapter Izzy stated that Mal would need “some powerful conduits” to beat the deadlies. It sounds like they’ll need one for each of the deadlies. They currently have:
        Harry’s pipe that Greed lit
Some of the lamp oil that Sloth infused
Lei’s mask that she was using when Pride was summoned
The cell phone Alexa used to break into the hall where Gluttony was running its feast
The gem that Envy used as a conduit when it was slumming with Voss
and the Liar’s Heart which contained a significant portion of Lust’s power for a few centuries.

That gives them a link to each of the dealies except for Wrath. I would be willing to try the using gun that was used to shoot someone as part of summoning Wrath as the last conduit they need, which is what I assume Ganurath was suggesting.

        • spas

          indeed. still…well done.

ok yes, brain coming back, thank you very much. guess I was also confused by the gun being infused since I thought the deadlies needed direct contact with the object, but reviewing Lei’s chapter made it make sense.

Yeah, you know… I don’t care. If the dates don’t quite work out, that doesn’t make any difference to the story. This world has magic and time travel. I’m quite happy to postulate some other never-to-be-told episode that gave someone, maybe Fredrick, whatever extra years of maturity might be required.

Depends on how old you think Izzy and Henry are. I don’t think their ages have ever been stated. If we assume that they were in their late teens or early to mid-20s when they first met (which seems reasonable given that they appeared at the beginning of their adult lives) and they’re somewhere in their 60s now, that means that 40 or 50 years have past in between their story and the current timeline. Which is enough time for them to have Frederick and him to marry and have the clan of Barbers, and for Harry, Nora, Nicola, et al. to be in their 20s and having had their own adult lives.

Edit: Also, Nicola and Harry (and Izzy) discussed their mother in the previous story, and they definitely were not talking about Izzy. So “my grandchildren” shouldn’t be a surprise.

Re: Henry and Izzy’s ages in “Find the Lady”….

Henry talks about how he had “lucked into a few good scores” and that “they call it beginner’s luck,” and was actually trying to escape the shadow of his father (now there’s a backstory that might be interesting to hear one day): http://www.widdershinscomic.com/wdshn/may-22nd-2015/

Izzy tells Henry that she’s working as a gardener to support her independent research “because university isn’t for the likes of me”: http://www.widdershinscomic.com/wdshn/july-7th-2015/

So, obviously, they’re both around university age, which I would guess would be between 18 and 22?

          • The thing is that i’m pretty sure that based on the dates i’ve seen, Izzy and Henry met about forty-two years ago (i think that’s the right number). Three generations in forty-two years (with the eldest of the second generation in her latter twenties at least) seems like pretty fast work.

              • I changed the date to add an extra ten years because I am bad at maths and am tired of people reminding me of this

                • I was going to ask, what is the date in the comic now (it was 1834 if I recall) and how will this change affect historical continuity in previous stories? But then I remembered that (a) you get cross when people start nit-picking about historical details in an alternative universe and (b) you own a big night stick just like Captain Barber’s, so I’m going to shut up now.

We haven’t met “The Mother” yet.

Also known as “She Who Must Not Be Named”.

      • Elaine Barber nee Grant. It’s in the family tree in the About section. If Lord Barber got Ms Holt pregnant more or less straight after the events of ‘Find the Lady’, which is not at all unlikely, and if their son Fredrick got married when he was 16 and produced Captain Barber, the dates more or less work.

        • Better revise that to “She Who Is Seldom Named”, then

  • Fun Fact: New Widdershins is actually a small township in northern Maine. Though originally founded by wizard colonist Milburn Roach, it has thus far failed to produce any significant concentration of magic users and is known mostly for the unduly foreboding architecture of some of the town’s older residences and for being the only known habitat of the rare yet largely unremarkable Torgo’s small-footed crayhawk.

That’s canon now, if only because the chances of it ever being directly contradicted in-story are pretty slim.
