    Yay for teamwork !

  • Maria Gerasimova

  • You know, Sloth is just never going to be good at follow-up.

Bravo for making that weakness matter in such a realistic way.

  • I like the quick switch from ‘Lass’ to ‘Ma’am’ when Mrs O’Malley realises the boss is giving a ticking off. Lucky Ms Acedia isn’t the sort that offers to help her servant get the trolley up the steps.

  • Who will win?

Sleepless Wraith Cursed To Roam The Earth vs One Shooty Boy

    • We’re all hoping for a bit of lenient DM’ing here.

      • AJ

I think Fairbarn has so many exhaustion penalties she can’t roll higher than a 2.

        • Doesn’t matter how many minuses your save is on, it’s always possible to throw a natural 20.

          • JWLM

Depends on house rules. Sometimes it’s 20 + some percentile score.

(Penalizes rushing into conflict without thinking.)

          • non_canon

True, but the same can be said for Ben as well.

            • TheCatCameBack

Ben can always use that inspiration Vi gave him to re-roll. Plus, his con-save modifier has to be, like, a +10. Kid’s got determination in spades.

          • DataProwler Netizen

I dunno. If she is sleepless, I’m pretty sure sleep darts aren’t gonna work. You can roll a critical, but that doesn’t change the reality.

            • Matthew Krawczun

the point of using the sleep dart was to use that sleeplessness against her. watch her turn into a black whole or something in the next page lol

              • JustinR

DM could rule immunity, or could have it inflict incapacitation, which resembles sleep, and say that’s what it did all along.
Depends on whos turn it was to bring the snacks for DM leniency.

      • JWLM

Rolling at +5 for Ms. Fairbairn being grateful to Ben for trying to give her sleep.

        • MoeLane

That’s definitely a backstab, too. Complete tactical surprise.

  • Pangaea

I like the look of relief from Mrs O’Malley’s spirit in the 5th panel.

Next up: what happens when someone who can’t sleep gets hit by a sleeping dart.

    • non_canon

I was absolutely sure he was going to smash the lantern, but I’m actually glad to see it go this way since I’ve been wondering about the darts since the discussion the other day.

    • Haven

      She explodes.

    • DataProwler Netizen

      She begs for more?

  • Anne-US

Good aim, Ben! Your determination is going to save everyone.

Love how expressive Enid’s spirit is.

    • non_canon

I have long had this headcanon that meeting any other members of Ben’s family will include them freaking out that the youngest/least skilled (not a 1st class wizard or an adventuress) member of the family got caught up in all of this, and Ben will casually gesture to Verity and say something along the lines of “of course I’m okay, I had her with me the whole time”. This page kinda makes me think a reversed situation could happen, with Verity being the one to wave away concern with “of course I’m fine, I’m me and I had Benji with me the whole time.”

      • Nonesuch

Either would be really nice. ^_^

        • Odo

          Why not both??

      • Emily

        I love all of this!

  • John

I shan’t do it again (because I am never coming back).

And it comes as no surprise to anyone that paying attention is to much work for Acedia.

    • Wanna bet Mal is hidden in her basket?

      • The Wing

That was shown in the previous page, was it not?

        • Whoops. How did I miss that?

          • The Wing

Don’t be embarrassed; I’ve missed my fair share of crucial plot information or just general obvious details. :E

          • camisu

I just saw yesterday’s panel now! Almost two weeks later! I think my computer hid it!

  • Ocean Burning.

    “Action Wizard” strikes again! :D

    • non_canon

Something I realized when I was reading this page is that the university Ben graduated from is now going to have bragging rights, because while they may be a lower tier school they’re the lower tier school who produced Ben Thackerey, one of the wizards who helped save an anchor and the surrounding town from the Seven Deadly Sins.

      • Heylir

Yeah, in the process of writing the fanfic about Ben’s final exams, I had a thought about a marble table telling that this college has as a graduate Benjamin Thackerey, one of the Heroes of the Deadly War. :)

        • Anne-US

Absolutely loved that fanfic story by you. It really seems plausible, with what we know of his character.

          • Heylir

Thanks, I’m very happy to hear it!

        • Ocean Burning.

I was thinking, what non-canon suggests would add a whole new level of irony to your story! XD

          • Heylir

            Yeah, I agree. :)
(I got it, thank you, and I’m working on it, now.)

  • non_canon

I’m really sad that circumstances suggest Enid is no longer living, because she is so awesome and I would love for her to get to see the little boy she rescued come to a place where he’s in control of the powers that have caused him such problems over the years and be surrounded by a group of people who care about him.

    • Nonesuch

Time is a cruel mistress. :|

    • spas

maybe her ghost can still witness that!

      • non_canon

Okay, I love this idea all on it’s own, but I also love it for the idea of Ghost!Enid taking up residence in the Buggerup Office. I could see her hanging around enjoying the team, like hanging around Wolfe’s room when he’s playing, and looking after them in little ways like putting a blanket on them when they fall asleep on the couch or helping them finding little things they’ve lost.

        • Ocean Burning.

That’s cool. Have we seen ghosts in the Widderverse? I feel like we haven’t…?

          • Emily

I don’t think we have, but I wouldn’t be at all surprised if Mal’s abilities extended to seeing ghosts as well as other kinds of spirits.

            • The relationship between summoned spirits, living people’s spirits, and what happens to people’s spirits when they die is a fascinating question, but I’m not sure I want to know the answer.

          • Well of course we haven’t seen them. They’re ghosts.

            • Ocean Burning.

Well, thanks to O’Malley we’ve seen quite a few spirits that we normally wouldn’t… Do you think they are there, but not even Mal sees them? : )

        • JustinR

So, a Widdershins meets Wilde Life spin-off.
          13/10, would read many times.

  • Yay Ben!

  • Grey_Moment

Motion to let Ben have a nice, long nap when this is over. All in favor?

    • Nonesuch

      There’s still a fair bit of work to be done, though. No rest for the weary… ^^;

    • Ocean Burning.

A nice bath first, and then an early bedtime.

      • AJ

“When they got home, they had to have a cup of tea, and some shortbread, and a nap.”

        • Ocean Burning.

Oh, what is this from? : )

          • AJ

Mr. Putter and Tabby Walk the Dog, in which an eighty-year-old man and his cat attempt to care for the incredibly energetic bulldog of their neighbor.

I misquoted; they drank warm milk.

  • Nonesuch

Enid was being very literal; she’ll not say another word to little Mal in that room ever again. :D

And Benjamin is being brilliant. ^_^ Can’t wait to see what that dart does to Fairbanks, come Monday!

    • Nonesuch

      Ach, I meant Fairbairn

  • Zero Xae’ith

Oof! Right in the spine! If she can feel pain, still, that’ll make her with she couldn’t, I bet!

  • WickedWitchOfTheWestCoast

Sooo I’m not loving the fact that Acedia has a gun on her desk.

    • non_canon

I am holding on to the idea that if something really bad happened right now Mal wouldn’t be smiling like he has been.

      • WickedWitchOfTheWestCoast

I’m just worried that messing with Fairbairn might change things, if this is more of a dream than a straight-up memory.

        • LA Julian

I suspect it’s running the other way – that Mal facing up to his past in Widdershins (with Harry’s assistance) and getting through the bleakness to ‘the good bits’ is what gave Ben the resolve to defeat Fairbairn now…

          • Maria Gerasimova

I think these processes are parallel.

            • LA Julian

Yes, chronologically, but this is Mal’s big test, and while he can’t do anything to help his friends directly in this adventure, it makes sense that nothing good could start happening, until he started moving again. Before he got up, ‘unpaused the story’ so to speak, everyone out in the Real World just kept getting picked off and losing, no matter their greater training or decisiveness or adventuring experience.

But now the Witch of Widdershins is back on the job, seeing it through to the finish in spite of Acedia on his end, AND the last member of the party – who is his own unwanted ‘third wheel’ partner in this whole business-under-duress (something else that Harry has finally noted and acknowledged as an injustice to Mal) – is suddenly able to rally and sieze the moment. Coincidence? Possibly, possibly…

  • I get the feeling Mrs O’Malley won’t be submitting her resignation in person, then.

    • She just did

      • I dare say she’s interpreting “Go. I’m bored of you now.” as being a bit more permanent an instruction than perhaps Acedia intended. :)

  • Sanjay Merchant

Enid O’Malley: I will not talk to the child in that room anymore. #ExactWords

  • Euodiachloris

The pink flame and the relieved expression… heeeeeeeee! :3

  • the Amazing Mister Moriarty

You can see Enid’s hands shaking in the first panel. Subtle, but powerful.

  • Emily

And it’s proven once again that having ideas in a crisis is something Ben is really good at. Go, Ben!

  • Ocean Burning.

This is kinda random, but I really love the layout of this page. I love being able to see the progress of these two stories happening concurrently. I guess it’s something that doesn’t really happen in many types of media. So I think it’s really cool to see here.

  • Patrick Handley

Love verity’s expression in panel four it just says it all

    • Pyre

What strikes me about Verity in that panel is the bags under the eyes to indicate how potent a sleep whammy she’s been hit with.

  • wilddeath

huh…. you know that brings up a good question actually. if you trade a deadly all your sleep and someone injects you with liquid sleep, is that considered a breach of contract on your part?

  • This guy

    This might be interesting.
